What Is Self Compassion Compared to Self Esteem?
When it comes to developing ourselves and achieving total wellness, self-compassion and self-esteem are both necessary. According to psychologists, however, a person should invest more of their energy in practicing self-compassion rather than escalating their self-esteem.
This is because focusing too much on your self-esteem could contribute to narcissism. It is accurate to state that self-compassion creates a firm foundation for attributes like self-esteem and confidence to thrive. Balanced self-esteem lets us be even more passionate about self-care.
For you to know the degree of effort you have to invest in both self-esteem and self, you must first distinguish between the two and know how they both influence each other.
Self-esteem can be described as the extent to which we assess ourselves in a positive manner. In some instances, self-esteem is associated with comparing oneself to others, as it symbolizes how much an individual perceives themselves in relation to their social influence.
Unlike self-esteem, self-compassion does not focus either on positive judgments nor evaluations but rather in how well we relate to ourselves.
What Practicing Self-Compassion Entails
Practicing self-compassion really means you are kind to yourself even in difficult and hard times. It involves talking yourself through the various seasons of your life from accepting, understanding to not judging.
In the past decade, self-compassion has slowly developed into a ‘movement’, with many people embracing its principles. When it comes to addressing low confidence and feelings of inadequacy, self-compassion has been particularly provident.
Self-compassion means you treat yourself in a similar manner as you would treat your loved ones or your best friend. In so doing it implies that you are willing and ready to admit you have flaws and this helps to keep you grounded.
As an individual, once you open yourself up to new learning experiences, it becomes easier for you to receive genuine feedback from people around you. When you are self-compassionate, you more readily accept your imperfections and forgive yourself. This acceptance allows you to let go and get on with life, instead of resorting to unproductive negative thoughts.
It is difficult for you to grow and better yourself if you’re not willing to come to terms with your shortcomings in life. Instead of acknowledgment and ultimately acceptance, many people strive to ignore their imperfections; in doing so they create a false sense of security in a loop of inertia. From here self-improvement is unlikely, or certainly slower than it might be.
Once you learn to accept your imperfections, eliminate judgment from within and remain at peace even when things don’t go your way, then you truly exhibiting self-compassionate.
Ways of Practicing Self-Compassion
Treat yourself Kindly
No matter what you’re going through, do not be too hard on yourself, as this is like having a personal bully living in your head. Nobody is perfect and we all make mistakes, but the difference is in how we let these mistakes affect us mentally and emotionally.
Instead of scolding yourself when things fall out of place, learn to ask yourself what lessons you can take from the experience and what can be changed next time. Appreciate yourself and your efforts always.
Have an Enduring Relationship with Yourself
The most fulfilling relationship a person can have in this life is with their own self. The way you treat yourself reflects in the way you treat others; hence you should always treat yourself the same way you would treat a best friend. Always work on being supportive as well as honest to yourself and this will express itself in your relationships with other people too.
Convey Gratitude
Instead of focusing on what is missing in your life, learn to always appreciate what you have at the moment. No one is perfect and the earlier you accept that the sooner you will achieve total wellness. Look past your individual flaws, delight in your unique strong points and form a strong bond with yourself to actualize your true potential in life.
