People who are suffering from alcohol and drug addiction, depression, some types of mental illnesses, as well as victims of violent crimes and their families are finding that self help therapy can help them to deal with the problems they face and help them heal.
What Is Self Help Therapy
Generally speaking self help therapy can be any type of therapeutic method a person uses to help them deal with certain problems or crises in their life. There are a number of CDs and DVDs that individuals use to help them overcome some difficult they are having. However, in most cases when someone speaks of self help therapy they are speaking of groups such as AA, where people who are experiencing the same problem get together to discuss that problem, the effect it has on their lives and the lives of their families and give one another mutual support and encouragement in overcoming the problem.
Self help therapy groups give people an opportunity to talk to someone who has been there, who really understand the emotions and fears that they have. In cases of addiction it helps to know that there are others who have struggled with the same issues, who have felt the same fear of failure and who understand the emotions behind trying to get clean. In the case of self therapy for victims of crimes, it helps them to know that they are free to express their fears, anger and even hatred towards their attacker. In all cases, it is often helpful for these people to be with people who understand. For many of these people a self help therapy group is the only place where they feel they can express their true feelings and emotions. It is the expressing of these emotions openly that oftentimes leads to healing.
However, with the advent of the Internet self help therapy groups don’t always meet in a local church or hall. Now there are groups Online that you can join. These groups have their advantages and disadvantages. While a group of people online may share your experience and understand your feelings there is no physical presence that can give you a hug or a pat on the shoulder that so often is needed. On the other hand, during a critical moment there may be an Online group or at least one person that you can reach out to which can be a huge help.
Does Self Help Therapy Work?
While self help therapy does not always work for everyone for many people it works when traditional therapy fails. While a trained and caring therapist may be able to sympathize and even empathize with their patients they simple cannot replace the companionship of someone who has actually been down the same road. It is easier to express your feelings among people who you know have felt the same thing at one time or another. It also gives hope that things can improve by spending time with people who have been where you are now and have begun to heal. It shows those who are at their lowest that things can improve and that their tomorrow can be better and brighter than today.
