Risk-based de-identification involves an extensive risk assessment to decide how much de-identification is needed. Khaled El Emam describes the method and illustrates it through a case study of de-identifying a data set for research purposes, and explains how to incorporate this within the context of a research ethics review process. Dr. El Emam is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine and the School of Information Technology and Engineering, a senior investigator at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, and a Canada Research Chair in Electronic Health Information at the University of Ottawa.
